Declassified Documents

“It may come as a surprise to you, but Kazakhstan was the last Soviet republic to declare independence. We had been sitting tight until the very last moment waiting for what was to come”, confessed Nursultan Nazarbayev at his meeting with Bill Clinton in 1994.

And he confessed not only to this.

We have taken the three stories* about the midpoints of the negotiations between the Kazakh President and his American colleague and compiled them in a single longread. The stories are based on the declassified materials published by Bill Clinton Presidential Library.

The text is available in Russian and in English.
