A Pre-Election Flak

The son-in-law of Zharmakhan Tuyakbay, the leader of the Nationwide Social Democratic Party (NSDR), may fund his father-in-law’s and the party’s political activities. According to our insiders, this was the argument used by the raiders that wanted to take over the business of Tolegen Balgimbayev, the son of the now deceased former Prime Minister Nurlan Balgimbayev.

Zauresh Baymoldina, a representative of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), has recently let it slip that, even though there are seven political parties registered in Kazakhstan, only six will participate in the election campaign. She said that the seventh one, Azat, did not respond to the CEC enquires and was absent from the information space.

This is not surprising since Bulat Abilov, Azat’s former leader, stopped being politically active a long time ago. The party itself has been undergoing the liquidation process for ten years after its unsuccessful attempt to join the NSDP and has long been existing only on paper. The only curious moment in this story is that the CEC, the Ministry of Justice and the National Security Committee responsible for everything concerning the political parties did not get around to deal it.

Then again, the NSDP is unlikely to participate in the upcoming early presidential elections, either. Even though this party has the acting leader, Zharmakhan Tuyakbay, and the “alive” website, it, according to our insiders, has long been experiencing big problems with funding. And there is zero chance that someone dares to support it financially at the elections.

Moreover, according to the same insiders, Akorda has already taken special measures to strip Zharmakhan Tuyakbay of perhaps the last opportunity to find the money. For this purpose, they have organized a flak against his son-in-law, Tolegen Balgimbayev, the son of the now deceased Nurlan Balgimbayev.

The thing is that Tolegen Balgimbayev has a rather diverse business including a share in Consortium Isker LLP. To quote Forbes.kz, this enterprise “is involved in the civil and industrial construction, design and dock operations in the Atyrau river port servicing such companies as Chevron, Shell, ExxonMobil, British Gas and KazMunaiGas. Isker holds the 16th position in the Forbes Kazakhstan 50 private companies rating”.

Obviously, such a big and profitable business is of interest to many. So, certain very influential people have decided to lay their hands on the share of Balgimbayev, Jr. And, to add more weight to their claims, they have put forward the argument that, apparently, the son-in-law of Zharmakhan Tuyakbay may fund his father-in-law’s and the latter’s party’s political activities.

But even if Tolegen Balgimbayev does not fund the NSDP, the asset will be taken away from him. If not directly, then via the deprivation of property. According to our insiders, he is facing the risk of becoming involved in the criminal case against Bergey Ryskaliyev and his organized criminal group since, in the past, their paths used to cross and they used to maintain contacts with each other.

This is quite understandable since the bulk of the Consortium Isker business is located in the Atyrau region and Ryskaliyev had ruled it for a long time.

If our insiders are correct, then it is not more than five parties that will participate in the early presidential elections that are to take place in Kazakhstan on June 9, 2019. More likely than not, there will be three nominees – from Nur Otan, from the Ak Zhol Democratic Party and from the NSDP. The other two parties, Auyl and Birlik, will simply join Nur Otan seeing that they, as well as the first three, are part of the Nationwide Coalition of Democratic Forces “Kazakhstan-2050”. And, as we know, this coalition will support anything that is planned and carried out by the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Leader of the Nation Nursultan Nazarbayev.
