The Uranium Scandal and Akorda

The news of the US checking the information on the violations committed during the Canadian Uranium One company purchase by the Russian Rosatom group and of how  Kazakhstan establishment was affiliated with this deal has been discussed in many Russian and Kazakhstan media and online publications.

From them, it follows that both House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and Senate Committee on the Judiciary are conducting the investigation. Certain corruption schemes involving former US State Secretary Hillary Clinton and her allies served as the cause to start the investigation.

A more detailed account of the events is given in the material republished by Nomad.

Since a part of the uranium-mining assets that had previously been owned by the Uranium One company and, after the purchase, became Rosatom’s property are located within the territory of Kazakhstan, the events happening in the US today affect Akorda directly. The fact is that the latter had actively been assisting in completing the purchase of Uranium One by Rosatom. Moreover, without the highest-level approval from the Kazakhstan authorities, the deal would not have been completed at all.

Mukhtar Dzhakishev who, at the time, was the president of the Kazatomprom national company and categorically opposed giving control over the Kazakhstan assets to the Russians was the victim of the situation.

His principled stance became one of the reasons for removing Dzhakishev from his post in 2009. The fact that, earlier, he had participated in selling several Uranium One assets both as the head of the national company and as a private individual was found incriminating and, consequently, was converted into 14 years of imprisonment.

Therefore, if the US investigation regarding the corruption schemes used during the Uranium One purchasing by the Rosatom group proves to be successful, it will inevitably affect Akorda. If for no other reason than the fact that, without its active participation including the full knowledge of the channels for lobbying the Russian interests in the US and the schemes involving Hillary Clinton and her circles, the deal would never have been completed.
