The Launch of Project “Unmasking Nazarbayev”

As we have observed, the Kazakh media-resources that, in the past four months, have produced a number of front-page stories on how certain members of Nursultan Nazarbayev’s family had “earned” their fortunes are now either publishing less of such materials or beginning to repeat themselves.

There could be three reasons for that. First, the factual database is draining. Second, Akorda has given the order to stop reporting on this sensitive topic. Third, for one reason or another, the people that have been “leaking” the info to the media and individual reporters are finishing doing it.

In our opinion, all the three factors apply depending on the media-resource. Anyway, it has already become clear that, even though it is Nazarbayev’s relatives that got thrown under the wheels of the public opinion by Akorda and Nazarbayev himself, they -

a) are not of much value to him due to a number of political and personal reasons;

б) have been compromised to such an extent in the eyes of the Kazakh citizens that it is easier for Nazarbayev to betray them than to protect them;

в) are not among those directly bound to the First President of Kazakhstan by being involved in the stealing of billions of dollars and euro so that their exposure will not result in him being put on the defendant’s bench (literally and figuratively).

So, even after the events of January 2022, there have been few exposes regarding the super-fortunes of Nursultan Nazarbayev, his three elder daughters (Dariga, Dinara and Aliya), their former and current spouses, first of all, Timur Kulibayev. Even though it is these people (not Anipa and Bolat Nazarbayev) that can claim the title of the richest members of the Elbasy’s clan.

For this reason, we would like to launch a project that will help the Kazakh public understand that, by allowing to arrest and “defat” some of his close relatives, Nursultan Nazarbayev is trying to keep safe the core of his clan and make sure it stays the richest and, therefore, most powerful one in the country even after he is gone.

Within the scope the project that we tentatively call “Unmasking Nazarbayev” and that is to become part of the already existing project KLEPTO.asia, we intend to do the following.

First, to publish (with certain revisions) the Respublika exposes that, after the portal was closed in 2016, have been unavailable to the public.

Second, to look back at the story of how Timur and Dinara Kulibayevs became dollar billionaires starting with their (very cheap) purchase of the Halyk Bank of Kazakhstan and ending with the sale of Kazakh oil producing industries to Chinese investors and the purchase of Romanian concern “Rompetrol”.

Third, to relate the true story of selling the shares of the Kazatomprom industries to foreign investors.

Fourth, to describe in detail how certain “products” of Nursultan Nazarbayev including Imangali Tasmagambetov, Nurtay Abykayev, Akhmetzhan Esimov, the Eurasian billionaires “Troika”, Vladimir Kim and other oligarchs became super-rich people.

We are hoping that our project will receive support of not only our colleagues in Kazakhstan and abroad but also of those who had been involved in the illegal and criminal operations that brought the multi-billion and multi-million fortunes to Nursultan Nazarbayev, his relatives and allies but who have now realized that they were in the wrong.

Because now, when the “era” of the First President of Kazakhstan is coming to an end and he can already see the path down the pedestal, these people have got the chance to make amends by sharing with us and other investigators the documents and information that will allow to accelerate the moving down of Nursultan Nazarbayev and his clan.

As a “teaser”, we present a photo of a document in which, written in longhand of former president of “Kazatomprom” NC Mukhtar Dzhakishev, you will find his refusal to meet in a penal colony with a representative of “Kazatomprom” who wanted to hand over the materials of the legal claim.

This unsuccessful attempt was a part of Akorda’s special op on maintaining secrecy over the matter that Nursultan Nazarbayev clearly wishes to keep under the rug since it may not only cause him a serious political harm but put one of his relatives behind bars.
